*I was given a copy of these books in exchange for an honest review. Although I was given the books, all opinions are my own. I promise to always be truthful to you, my readers. I want to provide you with only the best resources.
There are so many books and so little time! Who wants to waste time on a book that isn’t any good? Not me! Not only that, but I also like to learn a little something while I am reading. Reading for pleasure has it’s place, too. But if you are able to learn something while you are at it, all the better!
Adult Books to Check Out
The Pray-ers: Book 1 “Troubles” by Mark Smirza is a perfect example of being able to read for pleasure while still learning. Although a fiction book, the focus is on prayer. It’s the first in a series that shows how prayer can work in the lives of people throughout time. Of course, in a novel about prayer, there is a touch of the supernatural (a.k.a. angels and demons) thrown in. There are some unusual names thrown in as well, but an explanation and pronunciation in the back of the books helps. One of my favorite things about the book is that reference verses are included at the bottom so that readers can mimic the powerful prayers of the characters. A renewed confidence in power of prayer makes this book worth reading.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 ESV
Living Your God Inspired Purpose is packed full of motivation in a fun and engaging way. Charity Twitty-Hawkins’ personality sings out with a positive message. Who wouldn’t want to be encouraged to live their God inspired purpose? Just imagine what life would be like if we were motivated to follow God’s plan in a big way! This book pumps you up and encourages you to do just that. It’s a fast and easy read too–perfect for quick reading on a day by the pool. I also love that she brings her message from the perspective of a wife and mom–something most of my Minivan Ministries readers can relate to. Moms, you have a purpose too. It is more than just raising your children. That is a noble thing, but God created you to be a unique and special individual too!
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 ESV
Children’s Books to Check Out Too
Summer reading is for kids and families too! Unfortunately it’s hard to find children’s books that embrace children with different abilities. Roe Braddy wrote memoirs about being a special education teacher. While A SEAT ON THE PLAYGROUND: The Joys of a Special Needs Teacher is for adults, she has two books written specifically for children. The Box of Red Marbles
is a sweet little story about the value of each and every child. This version of the story was created for it’s simplicity for younger children or those who may have special needs that challenge comprehension. It is also appropriate for a public school setting.
And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1 ESV
The Royal Story Teller begins the same, but adds the Bible story of Mephibosheth and David from 2 Samuel 9 so that it can be used at home or in a church setting. This version of the story does take creative liberties, so make sure to explain that if you are reading it to your children. This book imagines that Mephibosheth (Seth) was a storyteller. There is a chance that he was since he couldn’t walk and spent much of his time sitting. When reading someone’s interpretation of the Bible, I like to read the corresponding stories straight from the Bible. I want to make sure my kids understand what is truth and what is speculation.
I do applaud Roe Braddy for tackling a seldom written about subject–children with special needs. If you want to discuss this topic with your children, these would be a great way to start.
