Did you know that April is National Poetry Month?  More specifically, did you know that April 17th is National Haiku Poetry Day?  Happy National Haiku Poetry Day!

National Haiku Poetry Day

Even if you aren’t usually a poetry buff, National Poetry Month is a good excuse to break the mold and try something different.  Perhaps a fun poetry tea time is in order?  Or maybe you could read some of the poetry books of the Bible today?  (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon)  You may be surprised to find that you are enjoying poetry more than you thought you would!

National Haiku Poetry Day

What Is a Haiku?

If you are easing into poetry, National Haiku Poetry Day is a great place to start.  Haiku is a simple form of unrhymed Japanese poetry with 3 lines. The first line has 5 syllables.  The second line has 7 syllables.  The 3rd line has 5 syllables.

For example:

This is a haiku.

The lines follow the pattern.

It’s 5-7-5.”

You can add a little fun and meaning to your celebration of National Haiku Poetry Day with a free downloadable Christian Haiku book. I am excited to be part of this special Christian group writing project organized by Faithful Bloggers.  22 bloggers collaborated to write it.  You can download the book below for free below.  It’s perfect for you and for your children as well.  In fact, my kids helped me come up with some of mine!

Make It a Family Affair

School

I hope you will enjoy reading this book.  Perhaps it will even entice your family to try your hands at writing your own haikus!  If you want to include haikus as part of your school day, you can check out this Haiku Poetry Freebie.

Quiet Time

Writing your own Christian haiku could be a quite an interesting twist on your quiet time.  Writing poetry can be an act of worship!  I remember writing my first haiku in my second grade class.  Even younger ones can learn to clap the syllables along with you.  As I mentioned before, my kids helped me write and check my haiku.  Make sure you check out the one about Jesus and super heroes!

This sounds like a lot of fun. My boys have a strong dislike for all poetry, although I think we just need to keep looking.

It sounds enticing. Love your writings. I really don’t have a flare for writing poems. But I may have to try and lay my hands on some in one of these days. Stay blessed!

I DID know it was National Haiku Day on the 17th! Since I used to teach creative writing, I was ALL ABOUT IT! Whether my daughter was excited or not, LOL. My daughter and I took a prayer walk and orally wrote haikus about the things we saw as we walked and prayed. We wrote about the soldiers we see jumping from airplanes.

    Soldiers falling slow
Nylon blooms paint the sky green
    Training to defend

She wrote a few about flowers and garbage cans (LOL) It was a fun way to spend our walk and learn a new poetry genre!

    Winning the battle

That was fun! Thanks for the challenge! It has been a long time since I’ve done Haiku! – Amy

I have a friend who loves haiku’s. She posts one almost daily on Facebook. But sadly, they are my least favorite kind of poem…

    Hi Tara,
Did I miss it? Where’s the haiku about Jesus and superheroes?

I hate to say it, but I’m more of a typical poem kind of guy. Like poems that rhyme :).

I used to use Haiku poems in school because they often were easy to make up quickly… not that any would ever be worth sharing with people!

I’m not sure many of mine were worth sharing either! That’s the good thing about poetry–no one can really judge it too harshly. It’s all in the eye of the beholder!

Blackout poetry~ What an impressive and creative idea. I never thought of doing something like this. Making these is like putting together a puzzle. Plus, it s a lovely way to stitch together a little fantasy story and get yourself in the right mindset to create some cool art. Repurpose the pages of old books by transforming them into poetic works of art with this idea to celebrate National Poetry Month in your classroom.

I love the idea of repurposing old books and doing art with them for National Poetry Month. I will have to stash that idea away for next year!
