Most parents would tell you that they never get tired of talking about their children. Talking about my son is no exception to the rule. I love talking about him. Some people might consider this a bit strange. Why? Because he is adopted.
Some Get It and Some Don’t
I have found that there are basically two factions of people when it comes to adoption–those who get it and those who don’t. There are people that understand and think our son is awesome. Then there are others.
Just this weekend there was an older woman talking to my husband at church. She said, “Don’t you have two beautiful girls of your own?” He answered, “Yes. And the most handsome little guy ever.” He said the look on her face was priceless–utter confusion.
Some people just don’t understand what it’s like to take a child that you didn’t give birth to and raise them as your own. We have two biological children in addition to our son. We can tell you first hand that he is every bit as awesome as they are. He is just as much ours as well. We don’t think about him looking differently. We just think about how handsome and amazing he is!
God Gets It
God has a lot to say about adoption... Click To TweetI am thankful that God gets it. He has a lot to say about adoption.
He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” Ephesians 1:5 ESV
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:18 ESV
Today I did a guest post about things to consider if you want to adopt. You can find it at Creating a Great Day.
How has your family been touched by adoption?
Oh, that makes my heart hurt. For people not to understand the amazing blessing of adoption, may mean they don’t fully understand our adoption into Gods family.
Praise God for your gentle ways of making the distinction known.

we have had the wonderful opportunity to be able to care for many children through out the years. Two of which we were blessed to adopt

I can’t even imagine that kind of thinking. All children are beautiful and it’s easy for them to become your own!

I love adoption stories! My husband and I hope to adopt some day! A friend of mine just adopted a little girl and I love reading her stories about the adoption process and how her daughter is settling in with them as if she belonged all along! I agree that God gets it! My prayer is that everyone would adopt at least one child!
Keep sharing your adoption story! Adoption is beautiful!
You are completely right some people dont get it at all. The rude comments I get when I say we’d like to adopt shocks me. You would think I would get used to it since I am adopted.

When I was a child I used to think of adoption being so cool. Parents got to choose their child from the Baby store. Now that I am an adult and having a few adopted friends. I see the beauty of it from both sides. It is awesome and amazing.

I often feel pity for the people who don’t get it. My parents all but adopted my cousins when I was a child and they got funny looks for taking in children who ‘weren’t theirs” and raise them. My mom corrected them every time that, yes, in fact, we all were hers. My husband and I want to adopt at some point in our life as well. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, people who don’t really get it are missing out. It is sad for them!
I love that God chose US. He set the example first 🙂
Adoption is a beautiful thing! I’m so glad that I’m adopted into the family of God

Adoption can be such a beautiful thing. However, you are right that some people don’t understand WHY you’d do it. My husband is one such person although he has great respect for a couple at our church who has adopted a few children with medical disabilities after being foster parents to them for a while.

Thank you!
Most parents never get tired of talking about their children but many people don’t like to talk about adopted child and no exception to the rule. In my point of view, each child has a beautiful thing. Thanks for sharing and I hope your family are happy.
Thank you. We are very happy together! I love to talk about our story in hopes it will inspire others who may be hesitant to adopt.
Tara,
I just want to thank you (and your husband) for what you did in adopting this young man. I’ve told our church before that there aren’t many things more godly than adopting since He adopted us. We went to adoption training and were considering adopting a girl, but we decided to wait until we were done having our own.
You guys have plans to adopt any other children if you don’t mind me asking?
