I have provided a basic outline, not a word-for-word format, because your children will enjoy hearing your perspective. You can quickly skim through this devotion and get an idea of what to say. Your children’s answers and understanding will dictate how deep your conversations go and what direction they will take. Have fun!
Intro: No matter who you voted for, the president of the United States of America has a huge responsibility on their shoulders. It is our job to pray for the leaders that God put into place.
Even our children can be doing this. Don’t mistakenly think they aren’t interested. It is their future that is at stake. They have been watching what has been going on in our world. They are watching you for your reaction!
It is our job to pray for the leaders that God put into place. Click To TweetKey Verses:
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” Romans 13:1-2 ESV
Thoughts to Ponder: Why do you think God cares who is in authority? Why is it important not to resist authority?
Getting Personal: Do you have a problem obeying authority? What sometimes makes it difficult for you?
Prayer: Thank God for our current President and the President-Elect. Ask God to bless that person and give them wisdom.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 ESV
Pray for our country to depend on God more than they do the President. Pray for revival.
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
Worship: We often hear the song God Bless America, but did you know it can be sang as a prayer for our country? Sing it with a prayerful heart!
Family Adventures:
- Eat a patriotic meal with red, white, and blue foods.
- Make patriotic artwork. Let it remind you to pray for our country when you see it.
Spread the Love:
- Write a letter to the President. Tell him/her that you are praying for them.
What is your prayer for our President and our country?

Recently I have begun incorporating prayer time into our morning time before we start our school day. Praying for our President as well as those who were on the campaign trail became a regular addition to our prayer time. It gave us good opportunities to talk about why it is important to keep those individuals in our constant prayer. I look forward to having more of these discussions with my kids and I think your outline will be very useful.

I haven’t done this in the past, but it is a good point. We need to add him into our prayer everyday. Pray that he makes the correction choices. He’s under a lot of pressure/stress!

Praying for our leaders is such an important thing, and it is so important for us to remember that they need our prayers whether they were our first choice or not!

Prayer is so important and I think sometimes we get caught up in order praying for ourselves or the people around us but we really need to take into consideration those who run our country.

My mom always taught me to pray first for our leaders. As a child I thought it was weird. I mean, we don’t even KNOW our leaders. As I got older, it made more sense. These people have tremendous power and being a leader is hard work. They face so much and we need GOOD leaders who will protect us, allow us to pursue our dreams and care for our families. There’s a lot riding on our leaders and we need to lift them up daily. Good post!

Yes, we have to pray for the president and rely more on God than anyone who is in office.
