I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word “memorization,” a feeling of unrest bubbles up from deep within. An image of staring at a page for hours pops into my head. Memorization like that is DEFINITELY not fun. So let’s find some ways to MAKE IT FUN!
“And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:15
One of the easiest ways I have found to have fun memorizing is simply to say a short verse in DIFFERENT VOICES. It’s a simple idea that I cannot take credit for. I first heard the idea when I heard the song Deuteronomy 6:5 from Randall Goodgame’s Sing the Bible with Slugs and Bugs. The voices are so cute and the repetition (and singing) make it super easy to remember the verse.
Then the You Version app started adding more and more family devotionals and I came across The Power of Same plan. The amount of verses included for kids was a bit long several days, but part of the plan suggested saying the verse in different voices.
Then we started choosing our own choice verses and coming up with our own ways to say them. Here are a few we have tried…
- Pirate
- Baby
- Cheerleader
- Monster
- Alien
- Rock Star
- Whisper
- Opera
- Underwater
For older ones, it might be a little fun to imitate people you know or celebrities.
Although we may be too “adult” to admit it, this can be pretty fun for us too. Getting those verses stuck in our heads, no matter how it is done, is important.
Can you think of any more voices for us to try? What is your favorite fun way to memorize scripture?
