We have had our son for 7 years exactly. The first time I held him in my arms was a culmination of over a year of paperwork and one and a half years of waiting after that. Not to mention countless fundraisers and an endless ride on an emotional roller coaster. Nine months of hormones had nothing on me. I know–I’ve done it both ways. But finally I held him in my arms. He was a beautiful, kissable mess. A true miracle.
There were tears–not just mine from joy, but his from fear. He DID NOT LIKE ME. And that was okay. We were told that he would be scared of us Americans with our big noses and loud voices. Plus, I had curly red hair and was a bit overweight too–quite the novelty in China! I even had strangers stopping to get their pictures with me.
We were told that if our son resisted us at first that he would more likely be able to bond with us in the long run. Then they said we would turn a corner after three days of difficulty. Like clockwork, after three days exactly, he began to open up.
Adoption is not a breeze. There is absolutely nothing easy about it. It’s expensive, takes a lot of time, and breaks your heart in the process. Complete strangers feel the need to broadcast their opinions about what you are doing. Many openly question you and not only think, but also say, that you are crazy.Adoption is also a miracle. But adoption is also a miracle. A little boy on the other side of the world was meant to be ours. He fits perfectly into our family. We prayed every day for years before he was even conceived. If anyone says he is not “mine,” they are sadly mistaken. I would lay down my life for that little guy. I would fight for him–I did.
Would I do it again? In a HEARTBEAT. Is everyone called to adopt? No. But some are. In some way, everyone is called to care for the orphans.
“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” James 1:27
My sweet little guy was born with a heart defect. Someone that we don’t even know decided to give money so that he could have surgery and his life could be saved. We are forever GRATEFUL. If you want to donate to help orphans, you may want to check out Show Hope.
How do you care for the orphans of the world and help others experience the miracle?
