I hope you will be able to enjoy some iconic fall fun this season. If it involves scarecrows, I hope your family will enjoy this devotion! I have provided a basic outline, not a word-for-word format, because your children will enjoy hearing things from your perspective. Thier answers and understanding will dictate how deep your conversations go and what direction they will take. Pick and choose activities according to how much time you have. You may want to just do something for a few minutes in the morning or evening, or you might want to make a whole day of it. Have fun!
Whooo is God? An Autumn Family Bible Adventure
Scarecrows: God Scares Away Our Fears/He is Our PROTECTOR
Intro: What do you know about scarecrows? (Scarecrows were created to scare away crows and protect the crops.) Just as scarecrows protect the crops, God protects us. He can scare away anything that bothers us. He is our protector.
Prayer: Everyone in the family should grab something that makes them feel safe: a doll, a blanket, the hand of a loved one. As you pray together, as have each family member say a prayer of thanks for what they grabbed and for the safety that God provides when we are scared.
Thoughts to Ponder: What makes you scared? How can God protect us when we are afraid? (Holy Spirit, angels, sending others, comforting words from the Bible)
Key Verses:
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear….” – 1 John 4:18
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”– Isaiah 41:10
“For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” – Isaiah 41:13
“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.” – Psalm 28:7a
Worship:
*If you have toddler’s or preschooler’s you may want to sing Dingle Dangle Scarecrow just for for fun.
Here is a version of Matt Redmond’s “You Never Let Go” that includes words for singing along.
Getting Personal:
- When is a time you were scared? What did you do?
- Have you ever felt like God was protecting you?
- How do you know that God is protecting you even when you don’t feel like it? (The bible tells us so! Stories of the past when God protected you.)
Family Adventures:
- Watch Veggie Tale’s “God is Bigger Than the Boogie Man”
- Make a scarecrow together–a real one for your yard or a paper one for the fridge! You could write your favorite bible verse from above on it.
- Go on a walk at a local arboretum or someplace featuring scarecrows.
Spread the Love: Make a Candy Corn Mason Jar Scarecrow and print one of the fear verses to go with it. Give it to a friend or neighbor.

Prayer: Pray the verses above together. Thank God for being your protector and protecting you from your fears.
