With all the back to school talk, wouldn’t it be great if we could put all of the demands of a new school year aside and instead focus on what really matters most–Jesus? I can’t take away the school requirements of your state. This school year, however, I can help you be intentional about taking a few minutes to help your family focus on God.
What is the Bible Blitz?
There are so many read your Bible in a year plans, but few, if any, are really designed with families in mind. The Bible Blitz is a family tour through the main ideas of the Bible. It’s a year-long plan that goes through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, picking out the main stories and central themes. The Bible Blitz takes into account the special Biblical holidays of Christmas and Easter, setting aside extra time to focus on holiday themed Bible readings. At the end of the year, your family will have an overview of God’s Word, His special message for us.
Why Take Only One Year?
Think about binge watching your favorite shows on Netflix. Don’t you love being able to focus on a series all at once, instead of taking long breaks between episodes? Conversely, how many times have you watched a show over a long period of time, only to have them bring up a character or plot scenario that you forgot all about? Even after they reminded you, you can’t remember all the important details.
Take time to focus on the highlights of the whole Bible for a year. You will be more likely to remember it and see how it all fits together. Click To TweetLong books, like the Bible, are no different. If you can take time to focus on the highlights of the whole Bible in just a year, you and your children will be more likely to remember it and see how it all fits together. If given to our own devices, we skip around the Bible like a fly buzzing around. This is a plan that helps everyone in your family, young and old, understand how the entire Bible fits together. You will be amazed at what your little ones will understand!
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 ESV
What About In-Depth Bible Study?
The entire Bible is great for teaching. The Bible Blitz does not dismissing the validity and importance of the whole Bible. There is a time and place for going through the Bible verse by verse. It can be hard to hit every verse with children though! I highly recommend deeply studying parts of God’s Word that convict you very closely. You can do that in addition to this if you wish. In fact, our family is studying this scripture in the evenings together and doing another in-depth study of Acts during school time.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God[b] may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV
The Bible Blitz, however, is also an invitation for in-depth study. Studying the Bible in a year, even if you are just hitting the highlights, is no small undertaking. Reading verses straight from the Bible will change your hearts. God is accomplishing His purposes. We have had some amazing, thought-provoking conversations based on things we wanted to point out from the reading, or, better yet, from the questions the kids have had about the readings.
Start the Bible Blitz Now!
If you start the Bible Blitz now, you can get through the first major chunk, Genesis and Exodus, before Christmas. It may not seem like much, but Genesis and Exodus are jam packed with great stories. (Leviticus, Numbers, and some others won’t take nearly as long!) You can also join us at Minivan Ministries Meet-Up on Facebook to keep up with extra activities and ideas for discussion.

This sounds great! I would have loved to use this with my children a few years back when we were homeschooling.

So many times when we’ve done devotions as a family it’s difficult to meet the needs of both our younger children and our older at the same time. This Bible Blitz is a great idea because each age could grasp what they are able at the same time. Thanks for sharing!
