At the ripe old age of !?!, I think back on my life and what I have accomplished, and, consequently, what I have not. Imagine if I had learned just one Bible verse each year of my life. That would mean that I could quote !?! Bible verses by heart! I can always start that now, and should. But what if we did that for our children? They could have almost 18 verses really hidden in their hearts to take with them when it’s their turn to face the hard realities of life on their own. (Though they are always welcome to come back for advice!)
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
Each school year brings new challenges, new goals. What a perfect time to pick a verse or theme for the year! This year we are focussing more on God and really learning the Bible. We are trying to learn to put God first and let everything else fall into place–especially with school. So when I heard this, I knew it should be our theme for this upcoming school year…
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 1:7
I have to admit that I really like the second part of the verse too. Especially since we have some issues accepting correction at times. (Don’t we all?)
So whether you homeschool or not, why not pick a verse that you want to focus on as a family this school year? You can check out my Memorization Board on Pinterest for some ideas of how to have fun with your verse too.

My theme verse is: “Wisdom is the focus of the perceptive, but a fool’s eyes roam to the ends of the earth.” Proverbs 17:24. I also found myself doing more Bible time and letting the school work fall where it may… not in an undisciplined manner, but I’m much more concerned with my kid’s character than their knowledge content right now. We’re all learning to get our hearts right before God first. It’s a huge blessing of homeschooling. My oldest son competes in Bible Quiz so he has memorized 28 verses since September out of the book of Acts; he’s also studied and learned most of the content too. It’s huge to see how his eyes light up, how he’s understanding theology and the church’s purpose a lot better. He’s 9. My younger too are not competing but they try to memorize his verses too. It’s great!
