I have provided a basic outline, not a word-for-word format, because your children will enjoy hearing your perspective. You can quickly skim through this devotion and get an idea of what to say. Your children’s answers and understanding will dictate how deep your conversations go and what direction they will take. Have fun!
Whooo is God? An Autumn Family Bible Adventure
Mummies–Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life
Intro: We don’t do “scary” at our house. Sometimes, even though we don’t talk about something, that doesn’t mean we don’t happen by it when we are out, or even flip by it on TV. Mummy’s are one example.
Do you know what a mummy is? A mummy might seem a little scary at first, but when you know that Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life,, we don’t have to be afraid. God is in control of everything–living and dead. Only God is capable of bringing something back to life.
Did you know there is a mummy in the Bible? Not a real mummy, of course. But there is a story of someone who died, was wrapped in cloths, and was brought back to life by Jesus.
Key Verses: John 11:1-45
Read today’s verses from whatever version of the Bible your family prefers. This is a fantastic true story that your children should hear in it’s entirety. If your kids are younger, you might want to read it to them from a children’s Bible or have them watch a video clip of the story. Never underestimate the power of reading it to them straight from the Bible though!

Key Verse:
After saying these things, He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” John 11:11 ESV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” John 11:25 ESV
Thoughts to Ponder: How would you have reacted if you had seen Lazarus come back to life?
Getting Personal: How does it make you feel to know that God is in control of life and death? What do you think heaven will be like? Have you accepted Christ as your savior so that you can live there with Him one day?
Prayer: Thank God for creating you and giving you life. Thank Him for being the God who can create and help us through life. Thank Him that we don’t have to fear anything because of Him, even death.
Worship: Your preschool and elementary children may enjoy this video, “My Hope is in the Lord, from Cave Quest VBS by Group Publishing.
Family Adventures:
- Read a book about mummies together.
- Make mummy hotdogs.
- Use a roll of toilet paper to act out the story of Lazarus.
Spread the Love:
- If you have a loved one who has passed away, go put flowers on their grave. Take someone else who loved them with you. (I know it means a lot to my grandmother when we take her to the cemetery to visit her husband’s grave.) Celebrate the life of loved ones who have passed on by eating one of their favorite foods and/or looking at old photos of them. Share memories. Thank God that He is the Resurrection and the Life!
