A double edged sword sounds dangerous—and it is!  It also, traditionally, like it might be intended for a boy.  Girls have come a long way, however.  From the right to vote in 1920, to being able todo practically anything they set their minds to today,  the double edged sword is also for us girls. I have found a double edged sword for girls that I want to share with you today.  Of course, I’m talking about the Word of God!  But before we delve into this awesome Bible that I discovered, let’s take a look at why the Word of God itself is so special.

Double-Edged Sword for Girls

Analogies

Nothing compares to a good analogy for teaching.  The Bible is full of them!  Let’s take a look at a couple of great analogies for the Word of God.

A Double Edged Sword

This is a popular analogy and especially great for your adventurous boys.  We need to get boys into the Word and teach them the joys of being a man of God.  People have a tendency to water down the Word and make it a little too sweet, taking the edge off of it.  Boys need to feel that sense of wild daringness that God brings to life. Let’s take a deeper look at the Word.

If you have been around church very long, there is a good chance that you have heard Hebrews 4:12, but new meaning comes to light when we look at a verse in context, with the verses before and after it.

“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us, therefore, strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:9-13 ESV

Hebrews 4:9-13 ESV

Who would have thought that the verses before “the Word of God…is sharper than any two-edged sword” would be about rest?!  We have to strive to rest so that we can be obedient–obedient to God as revealed through His Word.  Rest doesn’t come easily, but we struggle to be obedient without it.  The Word also works to convict us and enables us to be obedient, getting to the core of our heart!  We need the Word!

Vegetables

Let’s look at another analogy that most of us can relate to.  It might be especially good to share with your health-conscious kids.

We all know that we need the word of God, but let’s be honest…sometimes we view the word of God like vegetables.  It’s good for us.  We try to fit it into our diet.  But when given the opportunity, we choose the chocolate cake.  The chocolate cake is rich and decadent.  It’s delicious going down but often leads to heartburn.  Vegetables, on the other hand, heal our bodies.  They are colorful and good for us.  We often don’t know how much we need them until we don’t have them for a while.  We try to replace them with cheap vitamins, but there is nothing like the real deal.  Nothing can beat their taste straight from the field on summer’s day.  God’s word is a vegetable for the soul.  There is no replacement for the power of the Word in a young girl’s life.

The Word is Power

However you look at the Bible, it is powerful.  We can never get enough of it because it is the very bread that sustains our life.

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

John 6:35 ESV

Multiple Bibles?

Here is a question that I often struggle with….”How many Bibles do you have?”  As someone who grew up in church, I have several Bibles…a few from my childhood, young adulthood, and adulthood.  Each one means something different to me.  The way they feel, even the way they smell, and the pictures all speak to me in different ways.
