Today’s adventure…Ravens!

I have provided a basic outline, not a word-for-word format, because your children will enjoy hearing things from your perspective.  Thier answers and understanding will dictate how deep your conversations go and what direction they will take.  Have fun!

Whooo is God? An Autumn Family Bible Adventure

Ravens:  God Provides Everything We Need

Intro:  Do remember any Bible stories about ravens?  God talked about using the ravens to take care of people.  There is a story in the Old Testament when God used the ravens to bring food to take care of a prophet named Elijah.  In the new testament, God took care of the them.

Here are some fun facts about ravens.

Prayer:  Talk about some needs that you may have or needs you know that others have.  Pray for those needs.   Ask God to help use you to help take care of others.  Thank Him for taking care of everything you need.

Key Verses:  Read and discuss…

Elijah Fed by Ravens

2 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.”

5 So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.  1 Kings 17:2-6 NIV

Have you heard this story before?  Isn’t it amazing that God used the ravens to care for Elijah?!  God can use anything!  Even when it seems we are in hard situations and don’t know how our needs can get met, God can provide in amazing ways!

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!”  Luke 12:24 NIV

Sometimes God uses the ravens to care for others; sometimes God cares for them.  He does the same thing for us!

Thoughts to Ponder:  How are your basic needs met–food, water, shelter, love?  What role does God play in taking care of those needs?  What else does God do for you?

Worship:

Listen to Yancy’s “Trust & Believe.”

Family Adventures:

  • Make handprint ravens.  Instead of just involving the kids, could use a long narrow canvas and make a family raven painting to display during the fall.
  • Go on  a nature walk hunting for birds.  Bonus points for ravens!

Spread the Love:   Think of someone you know who has a need, big or small.  If nothing else, everyone needs to eat!  Find a way to help meet the need you discussed.  If it’s food, you could provide a meal for someone.  You could do this anonymously or let the person know.  Make sure to pray for the people and their need as well.
