Last month I introduced my 6 year old daughter, Gemma. She has a heart for the homeless and wants to feed the hungry. This month we had an opportunity to actually go and hand out food to those in need. Kids can feed the hungry…and you can too! Read Gemma’s account of the experience below…
Helping Feed the Hungry by Gemma
I went to a place where I gave out food to the homeless and people that need more food. It was close to downtown. We stayed for a couple of hours.
When we first got there, we helped sort the food. The food was left over from other places around town. It was food that was a,t or close to, its expiration date. There was bread, cakes, cookies, muffins, fruit, vegetables, juice, yogurt, and chips.
I was in charge of handing out fruit. I gave them a choice of oranges, apples, and lemons. My brother and sister handed out fruit too. Everyone who came through the line got two kinds of fruit.
One guy said I was doing a nice job with my apples, so he took some. That made me happy.
Some people helped push carts so the guests didn’t have to push their own carts. If I go back, I would like to push the carts for people.
I met lots of people. A couple of them had kids. From now on, I am going to pray for those kids because I want them to be healthy.
You Can Feed the Hungry Too!
Help the homeless and hungry. Here are some things you can do... Click To TweetIf you want to help the homeless and hungry, you can buy my personalized Bible verse cards and also the T-shirts I am making. I am giving half of the proceeds to the homeless through Lambscroft Ministries. I hope you enjoy helping. Thank you.
“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.: Isaiah 58:6-8 ESV
A Note from Mom
Thanks to everyone who helped out last month. Gemma got so excited when an order came in! She has been brainstorming what else she can do and how she can promote her products. We really do appreciate your encouragement and showing her that she can make a difference! Kids can feed the hungry…and do anything they put their mind too!

One is NEVER too young to feed the hungry or help anybody, whether they’re 5 or 55….

Kids have a special gift that allows them to see the humanness in people that adults somehow write-off or ignore. I love Gemma’s viewpoint on this ministry!

Hi Tara,
What a great way to involve your children and teach them valuable lessons. I’m sure Gemma will never forget this (and any other children too).
I also enjoyed the YouTube video and made sure to “Like” it. God bless!

I worked in a school district working with discipline cases, and one of the requirements to leave the alternative school and return to their home school, they had to do community service and we often fed the homeless they always had a great experience and I loved going with them.

This is great! One cannot over state the value in engaging kids at such a tender age. I remember taking my first daughter with me to similar event. Afterwards, a lot of questions ensued and you could she thinks differently about the world. God bless you Gemma. More grace!

That is beautiful! Since we are still in winter, my kids have made care packages for the homeless with the help of our church. They hand out water bottles, a snack, gloves, wipies, socks, and other small things. It’s nice to hand that out at a street corner instead of feeling the disappointment when you don’t carry cash.

Thanks Kristi. She is a good example for us. It’s easier to do the right thing when you know little ones are watching!

I think that kids spending time in service to others like this is so important. My older boys spent hours one November helping distribute food at the “Thanksgiving Blessing” program in our community (multiple sites for it.) They were so moved at how many people are struggling to put food on the table, but even more so was how those same people were incredibly grateful and thanked them for helping provide them with Thanksgiving dinner.
